Last week, it was dusty and hot. And I wanted rain to cool things down. Sometimes, you wish for rain and it doesn’t rain. But then other times, you wish for it, and the rain won’t stop. And, if you’re like me, you get annoyed that it won’t stop. Why is that? Why do we wish for something, and then when it happens, our happiness factor turns on a dime?
Even though He created us and knows our inner being, I suspect God himself is nonetheless frustrated with the way we humans are so easily swayed by our circumstances.
I was thrilled – thrilled, I tell you! – that with the rain, the cooler weather also showed up. I turned off the air-conditioning, threw open the windows, and relished temperatures (in July, no less) that caused me to pull up the comforter in the middle of the night. But it kept raining. It’s still raining. And I’m tired of it raining.
I’m a bend-in-the-breeze fallible human being. I tend to like things to operate my way. Oh sure, I was thankful for the blessing of rain. But too much rain? Not so much. I have things to do that depend on the rain clearing away, and it’s a pebble in my shoe that there’s still a downpour outside.
Still, I guess that fact that I recognize my weakness counts for something. What, exactly, I don’t know… Maybe I will (eventually) learn to count it all joy in all circumstances….
